What is the route of the TCS Amsterdam Marathon
The Amsterdam Marathon route is considered one of the fastest in the world and a go-to choice for runners chasing a personal best. The race starts and finishes at the iconic Olympic Stadium, from where runners set off on a smooth opening stretch through wide avenues and urban areas on an almost entirely flat profile.
After leaving the city centre, the course heads south through residential neighbourhoods and open spaces marked by long straights that are ideal for holding a steady pace. The route passes some of the city's most recognisable spots, mixing urban surroundings with green areas and offering excellent conditions for a fast first half.
One of the most distinctive sections comes along the banks of the Amstel river, where runners cover several out-and-back kilometres surrounded by classic Dutch scenery. This part of the course is extremely fast thanks to its flat profile, though wind can become a real factor, especially on the more exposed stretches away from the city centre.
The closing kilometres gradually work back toward the heart of the city before heading into the historic Olympic Stadium. After the final, completely flat kilometres, runners enter the athletics track to cover the last metres in one of the most iconic finishes in European road running, cementing the TCS Amsterdam Marathon's reputation as one of Europe's fastest and most prestigious marathons.

The start and finish are at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium, in the Amsterdam-Zuid district, so staying nearby minimises race-morning stress: you can walk to your starting corral without depending on public transport.
If you'd rather be closer to the centre and its atmosphere, central Amsterdam is well connected to the stadium by tram, though you'll need to travel both to the start and back after the finish.
Amsterdam sees high hotel demand generally, so it's worth booking well in advance regardless of which area you choose.

Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) is connected to the centre by a direct train to Amsterdam Centraal Station, taking just 14-17 minutes with departures roughly every 7 minutes.
