What is the route of the 47ª Zurich Maratón de San Sebastián

Map showing the race route

The Zurich San Sebastián Marathon features one of Spain's fastest and flattest urban marathon courses. The race starts on Hernani Street, beside the City Hall and the beautiful Alderdi Eder Gardens, following a certified course that combines speed, stunning scenery and some of the city's most iconic landmarks.

The route passes through the districts of Centro, Antiguo, Amara and Gros, taking runners along the famous La Concha Promenade and past landmarks such as the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, the Reale Arena (Anoeta Stadium), the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, the Kursaal Congress Centre and Gipuzkoa Square. Its almost completely flat profile makes it ideal for maintaining an even pace throughout the race.

Beyond its speed, the course offers spectacular sightseeing and an outstanding atmosphere, with enthusiastic crowds lining many of the city's main streets and waterfront avenues. The combination of wide roads, sea views and a smooth layout makes this marathon an excellent choice for both first-time marathoners and runners aiming for a personal best.

The final kilometers return to the historic city center before reaching an impressive finishing straight of more than one kilometer on completely flat terrain. The finish at the Boulevard, surrounded by the energy of San Sebastián's spectators, provides a memorable and exciting conclusion to the race.

Where to stay for the 47ª Zurich Maratón de San Sebastián

The Centro (including the Parte Vieja/Old Town) is the best area to stay: less than 5 minutes' walk from both La Concha Beach and much of the route, though it's also the most in-demand and expensive area.

La Concha Beach is another excellent option if you'd rather have a quieter stay, with hotels right on the seafront promenade and bay views.

San Sebastián gets a lot of tourism year-round, so it's worth booking in advance regardless of which area you choose.

Getting there from the airport for the 47ª Zurich Maratón de San Sebastián

San Sebastián has its own airport (Hondarribia), just 20 km from the centre, though direct flights are mostly limited to Madrid and Barcelona; Lurraldebus line E21 connects it to the city in about 45 minutes for €1.50-2.

For international flights, the usual option is Bilbao Airport, with a direct bus (Pesa/Avanza) taking 1h15-1h20 and costing €12-19, departing roughly every hour.

Both options are more practical than a train, since there's no direct rail link between either airport and central San Sebastián.
