What is the route of the Empúries Marathon

The Marató d'Empúries route starts and finishes at the Museu d'Arqueologia d'Empúries, next to the Greco-Roman archaeological site that gives the race its name. The fully paved course links the town of l'Escala with the settlement of Sant Martí d'Empúries, running alongside the coast for much of the way.

It's a nearly flat circuit with very little accumulated elevation, making it an appealing option both for a first marathon and for chasing a good time, all set against an unusual backdrop: the same stretch of coast where the Greeks and Romans first landed on the Iberian Peninsula.

Where to stay for the Empúries Marathon

L'Escala is the best area to stay: it's right by the start and finish at the Empúries Museum, with a good choice of hotels and apartments by the sea.

There's also accommodation right at the Empúries archaeological site itself, facing the sea, if you'd rather be even closer to the start.

Getting there from the airport for the Empúries Marathon

The nearest airport is Girona-Costa Brava, about 55 km from L'Escala, though there's no direct bus: you'll need to combine a bus to Girona station with another to L'Escala (line 607), for a total journey of over 2 hours.

Barcelona-El Prat Airport, though further away (about 140 km), usually has more flights; from there, a rental car is the most practical option.

Given the limited public transport connections, a rental car is by far the most recommended way to reach L'Escala.
